Apple Overhauls Safari Experience With Smarter Tabs and Intelligent Lighting

Apple is preparing a significant refresh for Safari, introducing a suite of quality of life improvements designed to modernize how users navigate the web. Arriving in December as part of version 27.3 across macOS, iOS, and iPadOS, the update introduces vertical tabs, giving users an alternative to the traditional top row layout. By shifting tabs to a customizable left sidebar, Apple acknowledges that modern wide screens leave plenty of room on the sides while precious vertical space remains limited. Mac users will particularly appreciate a dock like hover effect that provides page previews, though the feature extends to iPhone and iPad for a consistent experience across devices.

One of the most anticipated additions is an adaptive dark mode that finally solves the problem of blinding white webpages late at night. While many sites already support dark themes, others remain stubbornly bright. Safari now uses intelligent processing to build a custom dark style for unsupported sites on the fly, adjusting background colors and text contrast while carefully handling logos and graphics. Users can choose whether to enable this automatically for every site or decide on a case by case basis, although Apple has noted that designers who explicitly block dark mode overrides will still be respected.

The update also marks a deeper marriage between the browser and Apple Intelligence. Siri AI is gaining expanded permissions to read through the full content of open tabs rather than just scanning what happens to be visible on the screen at any given moment. This allows users to ask complex questions about information buried deep within a long article without having to scroll manually to find the relevant section.

Beyond simple information retrieval, Siri can now act as a digital librarian for your browsing session. New commands allow users to organize their workspace using voice alone, such as asking Siri to group all cooking related tabs together or sorting various shopping pages by price. From clearing specific site histories to managing reading lists via voice command, these integrations aim to reduce friction during heavy multitasking sessions. Developer betas are live now, with a general release expected by year end.
